X-men First Class Review
2011
Reviewer: Torrence Fallen
Director: Matthew Vaughen
Cast: James McAvoy, Michael Fassnemder, Bill Milner, Kevin Bacon, Rose Byrne, Jennifer Lawerence, Morgan Lily, Oliver Platt

Before Charles Xavier (James McAvoy) and Erik Lensherr (Michael Fassbender) were leader of 2 very different minded groups of mutants, they were close friends and allies. Xmen First Class takes us back in time, before these friends became Professor X and Magneto. We meet some old mutants and some new. We see how these mutants come out of hiding and band together to prevent a nuclear crisis, led by Sebastian Shaw (Kevin Bacon).

We meet Erik Lensherr as a young boy growing up in the time of the Nazi regime. We see him being separated for his family. His anger and desperation boils and his powers begin to show. The metal fence that separates him from his family begins to buckle and bend. Sebastian Shaw sees this and has the boy brought to his office. He demands that young Erik shows him his powers. Erik tries and tries but cannot. Shaw then brings in his mother, points a gun at her and again asks for Erik to show him his power, by making a German coin move. Unfortunately, no matter how hard he tries, he cannot move that coin. Shaw shoots and kills his mother right in front of young Erik. Rage builds and not only does he move that coin, but all the other metal objects in the room! The helmets of the guards compact together, crush their heads, weapons, knives and metal tables fly dangerously around the room…..and Shaw? Shaw is ecstatic and in awe of it all.

We move to England where we rejoin Charles Xavier and Raven, his “sister”. He a professor, with an outstanding knowledge on human mutations. Charles is approached by Moira MacTaggert (Rose Byrne)a Federal Field Agent seeking information and help about mutants, as she has seen Sebastian Shaw (who we learn is a mutant also) in action with other mutants, Emma Frost (January Jones), Azazel (Jason Flemyng) and Janeos Quested (Alex Gonzalez). Shaw and his mutant group are on a quest for nuclear armageddon and Moria needs Charles's help to show the powers that be, that mutants do exist and how Shaw can be stopped.

Erik, now a grown man seeks to destroy Sebastian Shaw, the man who killed his mother and family. Charles saves Erik from drowning and the two become friends. But not without a lot of ups and downs.

Charles and Erik with the help of Cerbero, a device that magnifies Charles telepathic abilities, locate and approach other mutants and recruit them to join the fight against Sebastian Shaw. The training to master and control each mutant's special powers begins. Charles also helps Magnito strengthen his power, which is so massive he can move satellites and lift submarines right out of the water.

We now tie Shaw's quest for nuclear armageddon in with the historical Cuban missile crisis and the battle ensues. Charles and his mutant group come in to save America from entering WW3. Not to spoil the ending….we learn how Charles loses use of his legs and how he obtains the name Professor X.

This movie is a feast for the eyes and a must see for all die-hard Xmen fans. I loved seeing the how the characters I used to watch on Saturday morning came to be. The die-hard will also notice a wee glimpse of Storm and a small visit to Wolverine. We can only hope for more Xmen films like this one!
